San Carlo Team Italia rider looks at his ESS campaign so far

Alessandro Zaccone has had a great start in the FIM Europe Supersport Cup, beginning with a fifth place overall in the WorldSSP Race at MotorLand Aragón and then winning 3 out of the 5 ESS contests so far in the season.

The 17 year old was unable to finish the Race in Misano, a setback that saw him lose the lead in the ESS to teammate and compatriot Axel Bassani. Before WorldSSP gets back on track at Lausitzring in September, Zaccone spoke to WorldSBK.com about the season so far.

“We’ve been real protagonists so far this season,” says the Italian. “The race in Misano was a shame; I could have got my best result of the year. From the start of the Race I was with the three biggest riders in the class. After the first few laps I suffered a mechanical problem that first made me slower and then forced the retirement. Like I say a shame, because we had a good weekend up to that point, as we have had often. We’ll have to make up for that in the next one!”

On a Kawasaki ZX-6R, the young rider from Rimini has shown how to get the best from the bike from his first race on it at MotorLand Aragón.

“The bike is fantastic,” says Zaccone. “In each Race my feeling with the bike gets better and I’m getting on better and better with the team. We always try and do our best. My objective is to get what escaped in Misano – that’s to say I want to be on the podium in WorldSSP. It’s a goal that remains a bit far away and we’ll have to put a lot of work in but we’re going to try.”

The ESS riders will be back out battling the WorldSSP regulars on the 16th September at Eurospeedway Lausitz in the east of Germany as the last four Rounds of the season – and the last three of the ESS – get underway.
